• Attempt to identify the chemical. <br />• Determine the hazard level presented as reflected in the school Safety Data Sheet (SDSs). <br />• If decontamination can be safely conducted with school assets, do so. <br />• If not, Call 911. Make sure the 911 operator understands that there is a hazardous <br />materials emergency. Provide as much of the following information to the operator as <br />possible location of release or spill, class of hazardous material, (if known), size of spill, <br />description of any personal injury, control measures already taken, your name and <br />telephone number, how you can be identified and your location when emergency <br />responders arrive and stay on the telephone until you are instructed to disconnect by the <br />911 operator. <br />• The principal will determine if evacuation is necessary. If necessary, initiate the <br />evacuation procedure immediately. <br />• Render district's first aid procedures as needed: <br />✓ know and use your school's Safety Data Sheets for an excellent source of first <br />aid information <br />✓ be sure you know where SDSs are located and how to find the necessary first-aid <br />information. <br />✓ seek medical attention. <br />• Document actions and decisions concerning hazardous materials incident. <br />• Notify the designated Assistant Superintendent's office and the Director of Maintenance and <br />Operations, Safety and Security. <br />• To report all significant releases or threatened releases, first call 911. Then call 468- <br />4400, the San Joaquin County Sheriff Office. They will call the SJ County Office of <br />Emergency Services. Call 1-800-852-7550, California OES, Hazardous Materials Unit. <br />• Call Environmental Health and Safety 209-468-3420 <br />• Call Maintenance and Operations dispatch (209-468-9061). If incident occurs after <br />school hours contact Securitas Security (209-992-2505). <br />• The building shall not be re-entered until authorization is given by the fire department. <br />Teachers <br />• If evacuation becomes necessary, each teacher should account for students under his or her <br />supervision and report missing students to the principal. <br />Other Support Staff <br />• Custodial staff assists administrative staff as directed. If safe to do so, contain hazardous <br />material. <br />• If a school evacuation is ordered, secretarial staff takes enrollment cards and sign -out sheets for <br />off-site student release and parent reunification. <br />21 Page <br />Updated: 11/29/18 <br />
