The residual volume of hydrocarbons very conservatively estimated to remain in an <br />area of approximately 233 cubic yards of soil for diesel and 192 cubic yards of soil for benzene are <br />22.1 pounds (3.0 gallons) and 0.014 pounds (0.0019 gallons), respectively. This residual mass is <br />found in a small lens of soil extending to an unknown point underneath an existing building. <br />Due to the clayey soils and the location of the remaining impacted soil, no additional remedial <br />alternatives are feasible without the destruction of the building. However, the information presented in <br />the reports indicate that a potential groundwater plume from the remaining soil contamination will <br />degrade before it will migrate significantly and therefore does not pose a threat to the beneficial uses <br />designated for groundwater in this region. Therefore, PHS/EHD has determined that the remedial <br />action completed at the site effectively protects groundwater at this site, now and in the future, and <br />concurs with the recommendation for closure. <br />A Case Closure Summary and a site chronology are enclosed for your reference.
