Box 1052
Colorado Springs, Colorado 80901
Re: Tracy Factory
Dear Harold:
I have reviewed the information on the two gasoline tanks at
the Tracy Factory. As you are aware, we previously performed a
preliminary groundwater investigation in the vicinity, including
a well inventory within one-half mile of the factory. This was
done to collect background information necessary for proposing a
groundwater monitoring program relative to the wastewater ponds
at the factory. In addition, I have reviewed the geologic logs
for 22 soils borings at the facility, most of which were done in
1966. Thirteen of these borings were at least about 100 feet
deep.
The uppermost deposits at the factory are normally fine-
grained, with abundant clay, and of low permeability. The
shallowest permeable deposits are normally penetrated at a depth
of from 15 to 30 feet below the ground surface. Highly permeable,
fine to medium sand is usually present below these depths. In
October 1966, water levels in the soils borings normally ranged
from 6 to 10 feet beneath the factory, and the direction of
groundwater flow was apparently to the south, away from the Old
River and the Sugar Cut Slough. The direction of groundwater
flow in the shallowest permeable strata is probably highly
related to the level of surface water in the Old River and the
Sugar Cut Slough.
There are three supply wells at the factory, and all have
surface seals of 60 feet or greater in length. Drillers logs are
available for all of these wells. The South Well is located
about 600 feet northeast of the unleaded tank site, and 400 feet
southwest of the leaded tank site. This well is perforated from
60 to 348 feet in depth. The West Well is about 800 feet north
of the unleaded tank site and 550 feet west of the leaded tank
site. This well is perforated from 80 to 220 feet in depth. The
North Well is located about 800 feet north of the leaded tank
site, and is perforated from 107 to 410 feet in depth.
