_.i
Nestle converted to a methylene chloride extraction
process. The methylene chloride process was operated until
April 1986. Nestle continues to manufacture regular
soluble instant coffee at this location.
Nestle employs 94 people and operates around the clock,
utilizing three shifts, five days per week.
VI. HAZARDOUS WASTE ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
A. Spent activated carbon with TCE: The largest quantity
of hazardous waste generated at this site is spent
activated carbon contaminated with TCE from the
groundwater treatment system. This material is
transported by Exceltrans and Dart Trucking and shipped
to Envirotrol, Inc., 24th St. Extension and 31st St.,
Beaver Falls, PA, 15010, and Cameron Yakima, Inc., 1414
S. 1st St., Yakima, WA, 98907, respectively, for
recycling.
The spent activated carbon is generated in several
locations on and off-site. The bulk of the treatment
system and carbon waste is located at the northwest
corner of the facility. There are several groundwater
extraction and treatment points which generate spent
carbon in and around the facility. Spent carbon waste
accounted for 18.06 tons of waste in 1993.
B. Lab solvents: Methanol, Ethyl Acetate, Methylethyl
Ketone, Petroleum, Ether, and Mineral Spirits are used
in small quantities.
Nestle performs on-site laboratory tests for the
groundwater and for product quality control. Wastes
are collected in 5 -gallon containers outside the lab
storage building and picked up by Safety Kleen for
recycling. Approximately 75 lbs. of lab waste is
produced each year.
C. Waste oil: Waste oil is collected in the vehicle
repair shop and from the various machinery throughout
the facility and stored in 55 -gallon drums outside the
vehicle repair shop. The waste oil is transported and
recycled by Alviso Oil, Alviso, CA. Approximately 1.42
tons of waste oil is generated each year.
D. Antifreeze: Waste antifreeze is collected in the
vehicle repair shop and stored in a 55 -gallon drum
outside the shop. The waste antifreeze is transported
by I.T. Corporation and then recycled. Approximately
.5 tons of antifreeze is produced each year.
01
