The property is a gasoline service station/minimart currently in the process of fuel dispenser
upgrade. On April 12, 2002, under the direction of San Joaquin County Environmental Health
Department (EHD), twelve soil samples were collected from beneath the dispenser islands at the
subject site. The samples were analyzed by Associated Laboratories for benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX) and oxygenated fuel additives by EPA Method 8260 and for total
petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) by EPA Method 8015M. Methyl tert butyl ether (MTBE)
and Tert butyl alcohol (TBA) were detected at low levels in dispenser soil samples #11 and #12. No
other oxygenates, TPHg or BTEX were detected in any sample. Sample locations are shown on
Figure 2. Analytical results are summarized in Tablel.
Based on the analytical results, EHD filed an Unauthorized Release Report and has required further
investigation of the extent of contamination. Ground Zero submitted the Workplan for Soil
Excavation and Sampling to EHD on May 7, 2002. The Workplan proposed limited excavation of
contaminated soil in the vicinity of dispenser samples #11/#12 and confirmation soil sampling.
Fieldwork
Fieldwork took place on May 15, 2002.
