Mr Lawrence H Beasley Project 22611-100 001
July 18, 1997
Page 3
ADDITIONAL SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION
From October 23 through 25, 1996, the following activities were performed to verify the
presence of residual hydrocarbons remaining beneath the site
An EMCON field geologist observed Westex Drilling of West Sacramento,California, drill
two on-site soil borings(CB-I and CB-2),which were drilled to approximately 55 feet bgs
Boring CB-1 was converted to a vapor extraction well (VEW-2) and boring CB-2 was
grouted to surfaced using neat cement Groundwater was not encountered in the borings
EMCON's field procedures are presented in Appendix B
Continuous soil samples were collected using a core barrel sampler Samples were collected
at approximately 5-foot intervals for possible laboratory analyses and to characterize the
geology beneath the site Samples were logged using visual and manual methods and
classified according to the Unified Soil Classification System Sediments encountered are
shown on the Logs of Borings(see Appendix C) Drill cuttings were stockpiled on site and
covered with plastic sheeting
On October 25, 1996, an EMCON geologist collected soil samples (one composite of four
samples) from the stockpiled soil for analyses to evaluate disposal options Drill cuttings
were transported by Manley and Sons, Inc , of Sacramento, California, to the Forward
Landfill in Manteca,California,for disposal
Select soil samples collected from the borings and the composite sample from the
stockpiled soil were analyzed for TPHG, and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total
xylene isomers (BTEX) using U S Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Methods
50301801518020 Two soil samples were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC) In
addition, the composite sample from the stockpiled soil samples were analyzed for total
lead The soil samples were analyzed at Sparger Technology in Rancho Cordova,
California Analytical results and chain-of-custody records are presented in Appendix D
Residual hydrocarbons were detected in the soil samples collected from soil boring CB-1
TPHG concentrations ranged from below laboratory detection limits to 1,190 ppm Benzene
concentrations ranged from below laboratory detection limits to 2 9 ppm Residual
hydrocarbons were below laboratory detection limits for soil boring CB-2 with the
exception of TOC, which was detected at 354 ppm Results of laboratory analyses are
presented in Table 2
In addition, three distinct soil samples collected from soil boring CB-I at 20, 30 and 45 feet
bgs were submitted to Raney Geotechnical Laboratory in West Sacramento, California, for
assessment of geotechnical parameters Based on geotechnical data obtained from the soil
samples, the soil beneath the site has a permeability ranging from 3 24 x 10-3 to 3 33819
SACK\2611CLOS URE-951dms 1
