Date:
To: Unit 111 . f
From: Unit IV
RE: Sampling protocol for Routine Tank Removals
Recent guidance from. the CVRWt1CB revised 30 August 1997 letter suggests EPA
Method 8260 as.the.method of. chalce for analysis of oxygenated compounds In ;• .
gasoline until a more appropriate method pan be developed. The compounds that
should be reported using 8260 are Tertiary Butyl Alcohol CM),* Methyl.Tertiary Butyl
Ether (MTBE), .DI-lsppropyi ether (DIPE), Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (ETBE) and
Tertiary Amyl Methyl Ether (TAME). Analysis of samples for Methanol and Ethanol,
should be required where there is reason to believe that these compounds were
stored In the underground tank(s).
We recommend the table entitled "Minimum Verification Laboratory Apa'ysis' in the .
Application for Permit to Close a UST include sampling for oxygenates using EPA
method 8260. Beacon sites should be sampled for Ethanol In addition to the above
five oxygenates. Any sites with a methanol tank should be sampled for that fuel. .
Sampling for oxygenates in soil and water using method 8260 is new for the {.
laboratories so detection limits may vary. The detection limit for the ethers in water
should be about 5 ppb and for the alcohols In water about 100 ppb. The detection
limit for ethers In soil should be between .01 and .05 ppm and for alcohols in soil
about 1 ppm. . ti
Muss
avws7
