The Report provides the analytical results of the April 2003 quarterly groundwater
monitoring event, evaluates the effectiveness of the groundwater extraction (GWE) and soil vapor
extraction (SVE) remedial systems, and states that SVE and GWE influent concentrations show
asymptotic levels have been reached by both remediation systems. The Report recommends shutting off
the SVE system, continuing the groundwater pump and treat remediation for hydraulic control, and
reducing groundwater monitoring from quarterly to semi-annually in monitoring wells MW -2,
MW -11A, MW -11B, MW -12A, MW -12B, MW -13, MW -20A, and MW -20B.
r Groundwater samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg), and motor oil
(TPH-mo); benzene-tolune-ethylbenzene-xylenes (BTEX); volatile organic compounds (VOCs),
including 1,2-dichlorethane, ethylene dibromide, and trichloroethylene; and fuel oxygenates, including
methyl tert-butyl ether (MtBE). MtBE was the only contaminant detected in all monitoring wells during
April 2003 (maximum concentration, 15 Ag/L). TPHg (maximum concentration I.2 parts per million by
volume) was the only contaminant detected in the SVE system influent gas. Two gallons of TPHg were
removed by SVE during the -second quarter of 2003. MtBE (maximum concentration 17 Ag/L) was the
+ only contaminant detected in the GWE system influent.
Comments:
1) Regional Board Cleanup and Abatement Order No. 5-00-704 requires that the SVE system be
operated continuously. The SVE system has removed 676.9 gallons of TPHg and 11.7 gallons of
benzene, and 1.2 gallons of MtBE since 2000. In the second quarter of 2003, the SVE system removed
minimal contaminants (2 gallons of TPHg and no benzene or MtBE), and demonstrated no significant
% SVE concentration rebound since the first quarter of 2003. 1 concur with SECOR's recommendation to
California Environmental Protection Agency
y
Recycled aper
The energychalknge facing California is real.
