Strong petroleum i
odors and staining were noted at depths between-2 feet and 13
3
feet below the ground surface. Hard pan (about 8 inches thick)
was encountered at a depth of approximately 14 feet. No
petroleum odors or staining were noted inithe soil at the 16-foot
depth. A thin lens of olive-grey-stained soil remained on the i
L -
north wall at approximately 7 feet. Access to the north wall was
restricted because of a large concrete- footing that extended from
I
the building on the north side of the excavation. FID readings
of the soil from the lower walls and the bottom of the excavation
showed no detectable contamination. -
The excavation was halted and verification soil samples were
collected (see Section 3 .2) . -The dimensions of the excavation
i -
were approximately 20 feet by' 9 feet withers total depth of
approximately 17 feet. Groundwater was not encountered in the
excavation. The excavation was left openland, fenced with
i
temporary fencing for safety purposes .
