s
23 September 2008
AGE-NC Project No.07-1537
Soil samples were collected ahead of the drill bit using a California modified split-spoon sampler
loaded with three pre-cleaned 2-inch by 6-inch stainless steel sleeves. Soil samples were collected
from pilot borings MW7 through MW 10 at 5-foot intervals, beginning at 5 feet bsg using a 140-
pound hammer to advance the sampler. Pilot boring MW 11 was sampled at 5-foot intervals,
beginning at 5 feet bsg until approximately 85 feet bsg, then continuously sampled until
approximately 110.5 feet bsg using a 140-pound hammer to advance the sampler. The number of
blows required to advance the sampler over each 6-inch increment of the 18-inch sampling interval
was recorded on the boring logs. After sample recovery, both ends of the second or other selected
sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape.
All sample sleeves were labeled with sample location, date, time, designation, and sampler's initials,
then stored on ice and transported under chain of custody to Cal Tech Environmental Laboratories
(CTEL), and a State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH)-certified analytical
laboratory in Paramount, California, for analysis. Selected soil samples were analyzed for:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015 Modified and,
• Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylene (BTEX) and oxygenated compounds: di-
isopropyl ether (DIPE), ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE), methyl tertiary-butyl ether
(MTBE), tertiary-amyl methyl ether(TAME), tertiary butanol (TBA), ethylene dibromide
(EDB) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) in accordance with EPA Method 8260.
All sampling equipment was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed with water prior to each
sampling run to minimize cross-contamination.
2.1.2. Logging
Soil was extruded from a second stainless steel sleeve and then visually described in accordance with
the Unified Soil Classification System. Additionally, soil samples were field-screened for the
presence ofvolatile organic compounds(VOCs)using an organic vapor meter(OVM)equipped with
a photo-ionization detector(PID: Thermo Environmental 580, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene);
concentration readings were recorded on the boring log. Boring logs are provided in Appendix C.
2.1.3. Well Completions
Pilot borings MW7 through MW 11 were completed as single-level ground water monitoring wells
utilizing 2-inch diameter schedule 40 polyvinylchloride (PVC) 0.020-inch slotted screen installed
Advanced GeoEvironmental,Inc.
