9
' 4 REMEDIATION PILOT TEST ACTIVITIES
' Three separate pilot tests will be conducted at the Earth
Grains Facility. A soil venting pilot test (vent test) will be
initially performed to evaluate hydrocarbon vapors in the vadose
zone near the source of the hydrocarbon release.
An air sparging pilot test (sparge test) will then be
conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this technology to
remediate impacted groundwater. This test will be performed
without soil venting to evaluate if impacted sparge vapors
accumulate in the vadose zone to a concentration which would
require a venting system to control sparge vapor migration.
A combination soil venting and air sparging pilot (vent test
/sparge test) will then be conducted to provide design information
needed for a full scale vent/sparge system, if required.
4.1 Data Evaluation
Venting and air sparging test data will be used to complete
' the design of a full --scale remediation system, design a vapor
treatment system (if necessary), and prepare air permit
applications for the full-scale system. Design parameters will
include radius--of-influence of the air sparging and soil venting
systems, air sparging and venting blower specifications, predicted
vapor emission concentrations and recovery rates, and
number of vent wells and sparge wells required to remediate
groundwater at the facility.
4.2 Sparge Well and Piezometer Installation
one sparge well and two piezometers will be installed at the
locations shown in Figure 4.
