' Page 5
Mr Ron Rowe
' July 6, 1998
SUMMARY
' The extent of petroleum-impacted groundwater has been delineated, and appears
to be contained solely within the Earthgraxn's property boundary Current BTEX
concentrations measured in samples collected during this quarterly monitoring
' event are consistent with a decreasing or stable trend of petroleum impact
observed at this site From 1992 to the present, TPH-G concentrations have
decreased almost four-fold, and benzene concentrations by two to six times in
' samples collected from monitoring well MW-1 Previously collected
biodegradation assessment data and other general trends suggest that the
significant petroleum concentration decreases at this site are a largely a result of
initial source removal, natural aerobic and anaerobic microbial activity
' Oxygenate parameters TBA, MTBE, ETBE, and TAME were not detected in site
groundwater samples DIPE was detected in two groundwater samples at
' concentrations ranging from 11 µg/L to 12 pg/L The relative magnitude of these
concentrations can not be evaluated because there is no currently established
regulatory cleanup objective for DIPE The extent of DIPE impact appears to be
in close proximity to the source of the petroleum release
CLOSING
. Philip and Earthgrains will continue to provide requested information to the
SJCEHD in an effort to assess the best method to ultimately attain case closure for
this site Future groundwater monitoring will be performed on a semi-annual
' basis, as agreed to by the SJCEHD Following the submittal of this report, we will
be following up with a telephone call to the SJCEHD to determine the next step in
our continuing work to close this facility If you have questions, or desire
additional information, please call Mark Milward of Philip at (618) 281-7173
' Sincerely yours,
PHILIP SERVICES CORP
' Mark F Milward
Hydrogeologist
' 1vgcl2NDQTR98 DOC
Attachment 1 Figures
2 Tables
' 3 Groundwater Sampling and Analysts Procedures
4 Water Sample Field Data Sheets
5 Laboratory Reports and Chain-of-Custody Documentation
i
i
E/121382/125997/2ndQtr98 doc
