Acculab's oxygenate detection limits were too high to be of significant value in the
samples collected from MW-1, SP-1, PZ-1, and PZ-2 because of gasoline
interference With the exception of two previous detections of DIPS, oxygenates have
not been measured in MW-1 samples using more appropriate limits For future
monitoring events, Philip will instruct the laboratory to implement sample dilution to
obtain the lowest possible detection limits for oxygenate compounds
There is conflicting data that would indicate whether the magnitude of groundwater
impact is decreasing Although the current benzene concentration in the sample from
MW-1 fluctuated higher than those measured during the two previous rounds of
monitoring, historic petroleum concentrations in samples collected from this well and
PZ-2 show significant decreases over time The relatively higher petroleum
' concentrations measured during this round, in the sample collected from PZ-1, are
similar to those measured 1n October 1994 This data would suggest that, while the
overall magnitude of impact is decreasing, the rate of reduction might be less than
previously estimated Philip recommends that another round of monitoring be
performed to determine if the results of this third quarter 1999 monitoring were
anomalous Philip's next round of quarterly groundwater monitoring 1s tentatively
scheduled for November 1999
i
1
S
1
t
i
,o
August 1999 Groundwater Monitoring Report Prepared for THE EARTHGRAINS COMPANY Prepared by Philip Services Corp
E\624001321121392EG46240014510899MON DOC October 8, 1999
