BP is constructing a new building
and re -grading the area around MW -1. MW -1 will be located immediately outside the footprint
of the new building in a driveway. BP is requesting Regional Board staff concurrence on
abandoning this well because of the difficulty in working around the well and because MW -1 is
cross -gradient to the TCE source area, has never contained pollution and is being monitored
only for water levels.
MW -1 is the only monitoring well in the southwest quadrant of the AA property, therefore it has
been a valuable data point for establishing the cone of depression of the groundwater
extraction system. However, Regional Board staff acknowledge that we have good historical
data establishing the cone of depression. Staff concur with your request to abandon this well,
on the condition that if issues in the future make it important to validate groundwater flow
conditions, Regional Board staff may require that you replace the well.
BP may proceed to destroy MW -1 according to the requirements of the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department. BP needs 'Lo document the well destruction, including a
signed copy of the well destruction permit within 30 days of completing the work.
