p
Wright Environmental Services, Inc.
4. Split spoon soil samples in the brass liners in the sampling tool (depending on
sample recovery) will be retained for chemical or plysicai testing. The samples will
be labeled and sealed in the field in their original liners. .;Sample liners ends will be
sealed with aluminum foil or Teflon®, capped with clean cap plugs, and labeled and
logged onto chain of custody forms.
All samples retained for chemical analysis will be stored on ice in a clean, covered
cooler-box/ice chest for transport to the Laboratory (see chain-of custody below).
S. The remaining soil sample will be extruded fiom the other rings in the field
and lithologically logged using the USCS andl collecting field evidence of
contaminants and geologic information. Sampler shoe cuttings logging, blow
counts, drill rig response and bit penetration rate and sample recovery may also be
logged. A lithology exploratory boring log will be made of the materials
encountered and sample depth for each boring 1;, The log will include field
descriptions of the soil lithologic variations, moisture conditions, geologic data, and
any unusual characteristics which may indicate the presence of chemical
contamination. Where soil samples are collected from excavations, the USCS soil
classification system will be used to classify the soil sample.
Contaminated drill cuttings and the soils samples no}t retained for chemical analysis
will be placed in 55-gallon drums or on plastic sheets and;;covered pending chemical
analysis and proper off-site disposal as needed. Fluids produced during drilling will
be drummed to minimize surface contamination. , Ultimate proper storage and
disposal of contaminated materials is the responsibility of the Client or site owner.
Reconnaissance Soil Sampling, Procedures
j 1. Soil sampling tools (split spoons, cores, etc.") will be disassembled, steam-
cleaned or cleaned in soapy (TSP) water, rinsed with clean tap water and finally
j rinsed with or distilled water, and air-dried prior to taking!each sample.- The cleaned
1 tools will then be reassembled with similarly cleaned, dry brass sample liners and
carefully lowered into the hollow stem augers for the collection of the next sample.
The drill rig will be decontaminated as needed and 'at the discretion of the logging
geologist.
i
2. When sampling stockpile soils or during soil excavations, the soil sample will
be collected by the following procedure; a clean brass liner will be pushed into the
stockpile or excavation sidewall, or soil in the excavator bucket. About two inches of
soil will be brushed away and the Iiner pushed into the ',soil, completely filling it.
` The liner may be advanced by slide hammer and spoon or directly hammering the
ring into the soil. The liner is then removed, sealed, lilabeled and logged onto chain-
of-custody forms and packed in a chilled ice chest.
WES Sampling Protocols Page 2
E
4'
