2.3.9 Soil Samples
Seven (7) soil samples were submitted for laboratory analysis (2 samples from SB -3 and 5
samples from SB -4) Based on the low PID observations during the sampling of SB -3, samples
from depths of 20 and 50 feet bgs were analyzed to confirm that vadose zone soil had not been
impacted by fuel hydrocarbons in this location The 20 foot sample corresponds approximately
to the bottom depth of the buried concrete slab and the 50 foot sample represents the deepest
vadose zone sample Based on the pattern of PID observations in SB -4, samples from depths of
10, 20, 35, 40 and 50 feet bgs were submitted to the laboratory for analysis The 10 and 20 foot
samples were analyzed to evaluate shallow soil conditions beneath the former USTs and fuel
distribution systems The 35 and 40 foot samples were analyzed to attempt to define the vertical
extent of impacted soil in this location The 50 foot sample also represents the deepest vadose
zone sample in this location
All of the soil samples were analyzed for TPH-as-Aviation Gas, TPH-as-Jet Fuel, methyl tertiary
butyl ether (MTBE), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by Modified EPA
Methods 8015/8020 The results of the soil sample analyses are discussed in Section 3 2 1 of this
report Laboratory reports for these soil samples are presented in Appendix D
2.3.2 Groundwater Samples
A total of two (2) groundwater samples were submitted for laboratory analysis One
groundwater sample was submitted from each of the sample locations (SB -3 and SB -4)
Both of the groundwater samples were analyzed for TPH-as-Aviation Gas, TPH-as-Jet Fuel,
methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by
Modified EPA Methods 8015/8020 The results of the groundwater sample analyses are
discussed in Section 3 2 2 of this report Laboratory reports for these groundwater samples are
presented in Appendix E
SAC/2-22-96/ENG/765436 8
