7759 South Airport Way Page 2
r
The work plan proposed two soil borings with hydropunches, HP1 and HP2, to
investigate soil contamination associated with former UST#3 and UST#4. Two soil
samples collected at 8 and 16 feet bgs were proposed for analysis. The borings should be
sampled at 5 foot intervals for lithological description and for field screening. Should
held screening indicate that additional sample analysis is warranted, PHS/EHD
recommends that those samples undergo analysis.
Three monitoring wells, MW1 - MW3, are proposed to investigate possible groundwater
contamination. The work plan indicated that two of the wells were placed in a supposed
downgradient location. Recent data from a nearby site indicates that groundwater is
located approximately 45 feet bgs and the gradient direction is to the northeast. Tri-
Regional Guidelines recommends a monitoring well be placed within 10 feet in a verified
downgradient location of the release. The proposed location for the monitoring wells is
too far from the area to be investigated and requires revision. The work plan did not
propose soil samples be collected for analysis. Should field screening indicate that
additional sample analysis is warranted, PHS/EHD recommends that those samples
undergo analysis.
Please submit within 14 days of the date of this letter the following: a permit application
for the field work proposed along with $89; a map with revised monitoring well locations;
a work plan addendum incorporating PHS/EHD's comments; and a Health and Safety
Plan.
Please also submit information regarding the disposition of the contaminated soil
removed during the 1987 excavation and the material used subsequently for backfilling
the excavation.
If you have any comments or questions, please contact Mary Meays, Senior REHS of my
staff at (209) 468-0337.
Earnest M.
