•
0
using appropriate respiratory protective devices as determined by on-site air monitoring using a
photoionization detection meter (PID) calibrated to measure the concentration of benzene using isobutylene
gas. Ingestion will be prevented by controlling eating and smoking in the work area.
The Site Safety Officer/Project Manager will establish an exclusion zone around the work area. Restricted
activities inside the exclusion zone may be allowed depending on the results of field measurements taken
during the course of the activities. Access within this zone will be limited to required personnel. Eating
and smoking will not be allowed in the exclusion zone. Current enforceable and recommended exposure
limits for potential site contaminants are presented in Table B-1.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
A minimum of US EPA Level D protection will be required within the exclusion zone for any workers
engaged in sample collection or other similar activities. Level D protection will include:
1. Hardhat.
2. Boots with steel toe.
3. Chemical resistant disposable gloves (when handling materials with elevated levels of petroleum
hydrocarbons).
4. Disposable Tyvek® coverall (when in direct contact with materials containing elevated levels of
petroleum hydrocarbons).
Level C protection will be required if PID readings repeatedly exceed 20 PPM in the worker's breathing
zone. Level C protection will consist of:
1. Hardhat.
2. Boots with steel toe.
3. Disposable Tyvek® coverall.
4. Safety glasses, splash goggles, or face shield.
5. Chemical resistant disposable gloves.
6. MSHA/NIOSH-approved half -face or full -face air -purifying respirator with organic
vapor cartridges.
If the PID readings exceed 100 PPM in the workers breathing zone, all work shall stop and the exclusion
zone shall be evacuated.
402 331-98 63 B-2
