06 June 2002
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1015
3.1. PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
A site assessment boring permit will be obtained from the SJC-EHD for all on-site boring locations.
In addition, a health and safety plan will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety and
Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities (National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
1985).
3.2. PARTIAL SEPTIC SYSTEM EXCAVATION
Due to the unknown nature of septic systems and lack of permit on file with SJC-EHD, the system
will be partially excavated to provide the exact sampling point locations. The distribution box,
beginning of each leach line and the end cap or seepage pit at the end of each leach line will be
uncovered and visible to SJC-EHD. At that time the determination can be made as to the location,
depth, and exact number o f samples that will be required. The number of samples proposed is
assuming that the septic system utilizes three leach lines, each 100 feet in length.
3.3. SOIL SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS
AGE proposes to advance seventeen soil borings utilizing GeoProbe"direct-push"techniques: 1)one
boring will be advanced beneath the septic tank if tank is considered pervious by SJC-EHD, 2) one
boring will be located under the distribution box (D-Box), 3) borings will be located directly below
the leach line trenches at 20 foot intervals along the entire length of eacli trench, and 4) if the leach
lines empty into pits, deep borings will be located at each pit. Each boring will be advanced to
approximately 2 feet into native soil directly underneath each sampling area. If the system uses
seepage pits borings will be advanced adjacent to the pits to a depth of 30 feet below surface grade
or to first ground water. If groundwater is encountered a water sample will be collected and analyzed.
The proposed boring locations may be modified due to exact location of septic system, the number
of leach lines and length of each leach line.
Selected soil samples and water sample if collected; will be submitted for laboratory analysis. If
contamination is discovered in the selected samples, the remainder of the samples will be analyzed.
The selected samples will be analyzed by a State of California Department of Health Services certified
laboratory for the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline and diesel (TPH-g and TPH-d) in
accordance with EPA Method 8015 Modified;
Advanced GeoEnvironmental
