Installation Procedure - Dry Hole
(Straight or Shored Walls)
• Set tank on minimum 12" approved backfill bed.
• Straight or shored walled holes in tight areas require a
curved probe to properly backfill under and around the
tanks.
• The curved probe is a 4'
section of the long -
handled aluminum probe
bent on a radius to match
the tank curvature.
• Probe (with curved probe)
the entire tank bottom and
around end caps.
• Place first 12" lift evenly
around tank.
• Probe (with curved probe)
the entire tank bottom and
around end caps. Push
backfill evenly against
tank walls and under end
cap.
Long handled Probe
• Place the second 12" liftr4\
% , Uttuf Bacikfill
evenly around tank. Installation Procedure - Wet Hole
Before you begin:
• Determine if a filter fabric is necessary for your installa-
tion (see section A6 for details).
In general:
• Water level should be maintained at lowest practical level
by using pumps (with or without a well -point system).
Bed
• Provide a minimum bed of 18" of approved backfill.
Ballast
• If water cannot be lowered, you will need to ballast (fill
tank) tanks to sink them.
• Place tanks in the hole, maintaining control with lifting
cables.
10
A.9 Installation Procedure - Wet Hole
% .
Add enough ballast to
sink the tank.
Water level In-
si
should
not . above -
w
shouldlevel uts'de 141• While adding ballast, use 'lifting cable to 'ell
keep tank 'In position. We recommend you install a valve on the air jet• which allows the
operator to safely control the flow
Additional information on alternate man -out -of -hole instal-
lation techniques is available. Piping and Sump Clearances
Tanks with Bottom Sumps
When installing a tank equipped with a bottom sump, ex-
cavating and bedding must be modified to provide:
• A hole centered at the sump location.
• Hole should be 12" deep x 24" diameter.
After the tank is placed, the void surrounding the sump must be:
• Hand backfilled and
• Hand tamped prior to adding backfill around tank.
External Piping
• The pump and attached piping must be free to move with
the tank.
• Use a fill box or street box to isolate the piping from the
traffic pad.
