Hazardous Waste Management
RECEIVED
Proper waste storage practices for Core Laboratory Staff MAY 2 9 2015
General Standards ENVIRONMENTAL
IJICpiT
Storage areas are secure with access control and posted warning signs. nCOAOTAAC1,iT
Closed containers at all times except when adding waste materials; includes funnels for liquids.
Maintain unobstructed aisle space for inspection, rearranging, transferring, and emergency access.
Available emergency equipment includes telephone, overhead paging system, portable fire
extinguisher, emergency eye-wash station and deluge shower, spill control materials and equipment.
General housekeeping practices regarding:
o Container closure
o Spillage cleanup
o Proper labeling
o Amounts in inventory
Labeling Requirements
i- Stored containers of waste are labeled, clearly visible, and legibly marked with six(6) required
elements(see example label below):
o "Hazardous Waste"
o Generator Name &Address
o Initial Accumulation Date
o Contents Description
o Physical Form (solid, liquid)
o Hazardous Properties (toxicity, corrosivity, ignitability, reactivity)
Workplace/Satellite Accumulation
Key Point: Satellite accumulation occurs at or near where the waste is generated. Satellite accumulation
containers are labeled with required information. Satellite containers are emptied once-a-day—no date
marking is required with this daily practice—"Empty Daily"
Satellite locations include:
o Automated slide staining devices in Hematology and Microbiology
o Manual slide staining stations in Hematology and Microbiology.
Key Point: Satellite accumulation containers are maintained closed at all times except when transferring the
waste to the storage drum.
Key Point: Satellite accumulation containers, secondary containment devices, as well as, work areas near
the waste generation process are maintained free of overt contamination and debris. Incidental spills are
cleaned up immediately and, if necessary, labels and/or devices replaced.
91
Central Accumulation Location
Key Point: Waste stain solutions are accumulated in the 55-gallon drum and remain within the Core
Laboratory until transferred to a permitted disposal facility by the licensed waste transporter. The same
practices regarding container closure and spillage cleanup apply to this drum and area.
Rev. 5-2015 1
