M
BP CHEMICALS
July 9, 1992
Mr. Doug Wilson
PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES
San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Division
F.O. Box 2009
Stockton, CA 95201
Dear Mr. Wilson:
M
BP Chemicals Inc.
Advanced Materials Division
Aerospace Gemposi
3437 South Airport
P0Box 6189 7
Stockton
CA 95206 J U L 1 q
0 1992
Tel: 209982016W-NVIRONMEN'TAL HEALTH
Fax: 2099621724 PERMIT /tIERVIG1
On June 26, 1992, approximately 10-20 gallons of a 22% sulfuric
acid solution spilled onto the asphalt. The acid solution, which
was temporarily stored in a rental tank with secondary containment,
apparently leaked into the secondary containment area without our
knowledge. When the tank was placed horizontally onto the trailer
for transportation offsite, the solution spilled onto the ground.
The spill was neutralized and cleaned up using a wet vacuum.
Approximately 190 gallons of hazardous waste was generated.
Enclosed are the manifests that the waste was shipped under as
requested by E. Ratliff and S. Schneider of your department. As I
mentioned to Ms. Ratliff and Mr. Schneider, the waste acid solution
was planned to ship along with a bulk spent acid solution
containing sodium dichromate.
The tank rental company will be returning the tank to the
manufacturer to determine what caused the leak into the secondary
containment area. They will inform me of their findings.
In the future, if there is a need for a rental tank with secondary
containment, we will verify that the tank and the secondary
containment area are empty prior to transportation offsite.
If you any questions, or need additional information, please give
me a call at 983-3339.
Sincerely,
Lon K. Kitagawa
Environmental Coordinator
