O - ya' v" -
Fax a Fax 41
120 South Aurora Street vpgO
Stockton, CA 95202
Dear Jeff,
This letter is in response to your inquiry regarding the sludge produced as an end product
of the Ink-Splitter wastewater treatment system, The Ink-Splitter was designed to produce
not only sewer dischargeable effluent but also sludge which, when dewatered to landfill
specifications, is not subject to discharge limitations.
The sludge is produced by the Ink-Splitter through the three-step chemical process of
precipitation, coagulation, and flocculation of the contaminants in your wastewater. The
flocculation is achieved with the 4031 polymer, which encapsulates the contaminants and
prevents these contaminants from leaching out of the sludge when disposed of in a
landfill. The sludge will pass the Toxicity Characteristics Leachate Procedure (TCLP)
test. This test, which is the one primarily used by landfill operators to determine
suitability of proposed fill, involves submerging a sample of the sludge in a low pH
aqueous solution for twenty-four hours, then filtering off the fluid and testing it for any
restricted contaminants. Again, the encapsulating action of the polymer prevents
contaminant release.
I hope this helps to answer your questions on the nature of the sludge. Additionally, I am
confident that among the files we received from rPS Printing Division we have copies of
TCLP tests performed on the sludge produced in installations identical to yours. When
these results are located I will fax them to your attention without delay.
As always, feel free to contact me should you have further questions.
Sincerely,
Robert Madison
