5F. TRANSPORTATION INCIDENT - INVOLVING COMPANY VEHICLE <br />NOTE: A transportation incident includes any spill happening during the <br />transport and the loading or unloading of a hazardous substance onto or <br />from a vehicle. <br />1. IF IT CAN BE DONE SAFELY, isolate the source of the spill and take actions <br />to prevent further release. <br />a. Shut valves. <br />b. Prevent release from entering water body. <br />2. TakE care of any injured. Call an ambulance or paramedics. <br />3. Isolate the spill from human or vehicular contact. Suggested methods: <br />a. Cones <br />b. Stanchions or tape <br />c. Post a sign <br />4. Begin to fill out Scene -Management Checklist (Section 8). <br />5. Call your Facility Emergency Coordinator - provide with information <br />gathered in Scene -Management Checklist (Section 8). <br />6. Call the shift supervisor. <br />7. STOP AND EVALUATE HAZARDS. <br />a. Attempt to identify hazardous substance(s) spilled. <br />b. Identify the source and estimated quantity of materials spilled. <br />Refer to Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs), if available. <br />c. Evaluate: Toxic hazards (i.e., vapors) <br />Explosive hazards <br />Environmental hazards <br />Other hazards <br />8. If the spilled material is oil and the facility has a Spill Prevention <br />Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan, refer to it for response <br />instructions and notification procedures. If the facility does not have <br />an SPCC plan, refer to Procedure 5H, Response to Spill, Oil and/or PCBs <br />for response procedures. <br />9. DO NOT ENTER AREA OF SPILL UNLESS FULLY PROTECTED WITH THE PROPER PERSONAL <br />PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT. <br />5-19 <br />
