CWOSTCO.
W}IIOiLESALE
Date 6113/07 ENVIRONMENT HEAEI H
PERMIT/SERVICES
RE: Hazardous waste generator program inspection report from 5/22/07 conducted by
Ray Von Flue.
Ray, this is the response to your visit dated 5/22/07. On that day you noticed two
violations that needed corrective action and a response. Here are the details of the
corrective actions that were needed to correct the violations.
Violation#4
Violation— Six unbroken fluorescent light bulbs were found in an 8 yard garbage
dumpster.
Solution—We took the light bulbs out of the dumpster and added them to our light bulb
recycling program, Universal Waste. These were six fluorescent 4' light bulbs in a box
that did not contain any identification. (I don't know if these light bulbs were from
Costco). We emptied the trash container of all contents and had Waste Management pick
it up and keep it. We currently have only one large trash dumpster that is locked at all
times for Costco use. The original intent of this trash dumpster was for recycling of paper
products.
Violation #12
Violation—There was hydraulic fluid under the trash compactor.
Solution—We first had the trash container removed. We then completely swept up the
area clearing all solid debris. We then used absorbent pads that are used in the gas station
to clean oil based spills from concrete. We removed all trace of hydraulic fluid from the
ground. We did find that there was liquid from trash on the concrete also. We cleaned all
liquids from the ground. We also added new washers to the hydr?.ulic lines to stop any
leakage during garbage ca, .-I , #a,. We placed the absorb- '.zt.11-'_e recycle can at
the gas station to be pickea up by Safety Kleen using our normal procedures.
I have enclosed some photos showing:
• 1st the full 8 yard garbage bin as found on 5/22/07.
• ' 2"d after the clean up of the garbage bin.
• 3`d the area in steel where we keep the pallet of light bulbs for recycling. '
• `4th the only exterior garbage bin on site. Locked at all times.
• 5th photos showing the area affected with hydraulic oil and liquid from trash on
the north side of the building under the hydraulic trash compactor.
If any additional information is needed I can be reached by phone at 478-2040.
Thank you, Scott Grafius, Costco Stockton.
1676 E.
