NRC should be on site shortly.
9:30am Arrived on site. Ryan stated about 100 gallons of sulfuric acid was released at a failed Flange in
the trench,of which about 10 gallons reached the soil at the south end. Observed soda ash used to neutralized the
spill inside the trench, acid still dripping from the flange at about 1 drop a second, the acid pooled beneath the
flange, and the impacted soil at the end. The length of the spillage from the flange to the impacted soil was about
39 feet. Ryan stated NRC will dig up the impacted soil, pumped out the acid beneath the flange, and return both
the used soda ash and the impacted soil to the manufacturing process rather than managed as hazardous wastes.
111; 3%.W am Left site with the understanding that NRC will not be able to complete the clean up today. Once
the soda ash is removed the acid remaining in the line will be blown back into the tank so the flange can be
repaired. Remaining impacted soil will then be excavated and returned to the process. Ryan will call to schedule
final clean up verification, when he will sample the soil for corrosivity.
415/2011 8 am Ryan left voice mail for an inspection this afternoon at Spm. Returned his call to confirm.
12 pm Ryan called and stated due to excessive amount of soda ash used they are unable to return the
impacted soil and spent soda ash to their manufacturing process. All the wastes will be managed as hazardous
waste by NRC and a licensed hazardous waste hauler. Tentatively scheduled for a final clean up inspection
tomorrow at 2:30 pm.
.,olc.0- mal +K$,+- + C14aN. wP 14-- be- cork pltfed
{.nSe C+ia^ @ 2 ►-tvcta-j . j¢ fvr+r i s t►(l ar,d s-
nsp?t ion -fvr -faWorro-j k¢ L L t Q^A "'t" z nn .
