Mr. Nam Baek -2- 26 August 2011
,
Based on the April 2011 investigations, GHS proposes to:
a. excavate soil to remove source area contaminated soil in the vicinity of well
PW26. The propose6soil excavation includes excavating soil from a 3890 ft2
'to the depth of the water table. Assuming a depth approximately 13 feet bgs,
approximately 1,873 cubic-yards of soil will be removed and replaced with clean
material.
b. abandon monitoring wells PW26-086, PW26-154, and PW26-199, located
within the proposed excavation area. The abandoned wells will be replaced by
new monitoring wells PW27-40, PW28-40, PW29-40. Additionally, intermediate
and deep zone monitoring wells PW26-154 and PW26-199 will be relocated
approximately 10 feet north of their current locations and renamed PW26A-154,
and PW26A-199.
c. expand the current, on-site extraction network by installing a new extraction
well EW-09 to expedite the removal of sulfolane affected groundwater in the
shallow groundwater zone.
Central Valley Water Board staff concludes that source area soil removal is an appropriate
cleanup action to prevent continued contamination of groundwater by sulfolane leaching from
contaminated soil. Therefore, staff concurs with the work proposed in the Work Plan.
Monitoring wells PW26-086, PW26-154, and PW26-199 need to be destroyed in compliance
with San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department requirements. Please-obtain all
necessary permits from local or State agencies, as needed. Provide at least one-week notice
of field activities to allow Central Valley Water Board staff to observe. By 16 December 2011,
submit the results in a report. If you have questions or comments, please contact Siddharth
Sewalia at 916-464-4658, or by e-mail at ssewalia waterboards.ca. ov
r
Siddharth Sewalia
Water Resource Control'Engineer
Private Sites Cleanup
Cc: Mr. Tim Van Domelen, J.R.
