Rosa STANDARD LABORATORY OPERATING PROCEDURES 6/30/2011 2
Volume A General Operations
A-13 Laboratory Liquids Handling and Recycling
Recycling of Laboratory Samples
1. Dry samples go into appropriate drum outside of QC lab against south wall.
2. Phos acid sample bottles are to be emptied into a 1 gallon plastic container
which is recycled into the phos acid sump.
3. The phos acid sample bottles are then soaked with hot water until the
solids on the bottom of the container can be brushed into solution and then
recycled with the phos acid.
4. Sulfuric acid sample bottles (98% & 93%) are to be emptied into a 2.5 It glass bottle.
This bottle is kept in a polyethylene bottle carrier. When full, the container is taken to
the acid plant for recycling by the acid plant operator.
5. 50% and lower concentrations of sulfuric acid should be kept in a 2.5 It glass bottle
to be used for neutralizing lab solutions.
6. The first three sample rinses of the sulfuric acid bottles and caps should be put into
a container for neutralization in the lab. The bottles and caps should then be soaked
in a dilute sodium bicarbonate solution (50 gram Na Bicarbonate/gallon) for a few minutes.
Rinse three times with both tap water and then with DI water.
7. Ammonium Hydoxide (aqua) samples should be emptied into the 2.5 gal plastic container
in the hood in the Special Analysis Lab. When full an Ammonia Storage operator or
a Pellet Plant operator should recycle the aqua into the sulfate plant sump or the
into the funnel that goes into the Heil scrubber basin.
8. Sample bottles should then be aired in the hood then rinsed 3-4 times with DI water.
9. If a sample bottle needs extraordinary cleaning, see lab supervisor for instructions.
Disposal of Acetone Waste
1. Acetone used in the cleaning of lab glassware and sample bottles shall be collected
in a plastic gallon container in the fume hood in the Special Analysis lab. This container
shall be emptied daily into the acetone waste drum in the back chemical storage area.
2. A bonding wire will be used when transferring the acetone from the gallon container
into the waste drum.
G:1LAB-ADNIIStdlabprocedureslVOL_ALLSOP-A 1 MLS
