Alpine SITE CODE: 1512
Stockton, CA
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) has reviewed the
Quarterly Monitoring/Soil Excavation Report dated May 14, 1993,submitted by Weston, and has the following
comments.
The March 1993 over-excavation activities removed a large portion of the petroleum impacted soil from the
site. However, the confirmation soil sample results show low levels of petroleum hydrocarbons still remaining
in the former tank pit area. In addition, the results of soil samples obtained from 50 feet below ground
surface(BGS)during the construction of monitoring wells MW#1,MW#2 and MW#3 also indicate low levels
of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil. This residual soil contamination may continue to act as a source to
the groundwater contaminant plume for some time.
The groundwater sample results have shown significant petroleum hydrocarbon contamination since the first
groundwater monitoring wells were installed in 1991. The high levels of benzene contamination in the
groundwater and the close proximity of a municipal well to the site justify prompt remedial action.
Therefore, several active remedial alternatives to abate the groundwater contamination at this site must be
evaluated, and any needed feasibility studies must be completed, during the next two to three calendar
quarters. Sufficient data must be gathered so that a final remedial pian can be developed and implemented
at this site. A final remedial plan for this site is due to be submitted to PHS/EHD by April 25, 1994.
If you have any questions concerning this letter please contact Linda Turkatte, Senior RENS, of my staff at
(209) 468-3441.
Jogi Khanna, M.D., M.P.H.
Health Officer
Donna Heran, REHS, Program Manager
Environmental Health Division
DH/LT:Ib
c: Beth Thayer-CVRWQCB
c: Erich Beringer-AREG Stockton
C: Paul Sundberg-Weston
A Division of San Joaquin County Health tare Services
