The nearest surface water <br /> bodies are the Stockton Diverting Canal and the Calaveras River, which are <br /> about three fourths of a mile north of the site at their closest points. <br /> D. STATE AND LOCAL HEALTH DATA <br /> Based on the evaluation performed as part of this interim preliminary health <br /> assessment, there are no indications that a non-worker population has been <br /> exposed to site-related contaminants at levels of public health concern. In <br /> addition, there were no adverse health outcomes of concern identified as part <br /> of this evaluation. Therefore, state and local health databases were not <br /> searched. <br /> COMMUNITY HEALTH CONCERNS <br /> The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry contacted the Remedial <br /> Project Manager, EPA, and personnel from the California Department of Health <br /> Services (personal communication, Diana Lee, January 1991) and the California <br /> Regional Water Quality Control Board with regard to community health concerns. <br /> At the time of those inquiries, no community health concerns had been <br /> reported. <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION <br /> AND OTHER HAZARDS <br /> To identify possible facilities that could contribute to the air, soil, and <br /> surface water contamination near the Kearney-KPF site, ATSDR searched the <br /> Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) for 1987 and 1988. TRI is a database developed <br /> by EPA from reports of chemical releases (to air, water, and soil) from <br /> certain industries. TRI did not contain information on toxic chemical <br /> releases of site-related contaminants from the Kearney-KPF facility nor from <br /> other facilities near the site. <br /> A. ON-SITE CONTAMINATION <br /> In 1986 and 1987, surface (including sludge) and subsurface soil samples were <br /> obtained from Pond 1, Pond 2, and the surface drainage area extending from <br /> Pond 1. The samples were analyzed for heavy metals, cyanide, and volatile <br /> organic compounds (VOCs) (sludge samples only) . From the data and information <br /> reviewed for this preliminary health assessment, it appears that soils from <br /> the solvent disposal and drum storage areas were not sampled. The results of <br /> analyses of the surface and subsurface samples are shown in Table 1. Sludge <br /> and soil samples taken from 0-6 inches are considered surface-soil samples; <br /> the others are subsurface-soil samples. Although cyanide was reported to be <br /> disposed of at the site, only low levels were reported in the soil samples <br /> analyses. <br /> Two on-site Kearney-KPF production wells (shallow (80-120 feet) and deep (230 <br /> feet) ] and three shallow monitoring wells were sampled to determine the <br /> 3 <br />
