Fi <br />Hazardous Waste Program Best Practice <br />Attention: <br />8/22/11 UPDATED Q Office Lead <br />Q Receiving Lead <br />Overview OSH is committed to being an environmentally responsible corporate citizen. <br />Associates are expected to comply with or exceed all applicable laws and regulations <br />related to the environment in the stores. <br />The Hazardous Waste Program Best Practice provides the store with the tools to <br />ensure the store remains compliant with the State and Federal hazardous waste storage <br />laws and the NFPA fire code. <br />Definitions Each store is required to properly determine if a damaged, defective or returned <br />hazardous material item is still usable. Once a hazardous material has been <br />determined unusable, that item is now considered to be Hazardous Waste and must be <br />stored in the store's Hazardous Waste Accumulation area. <br />Item <br />Definition <br />Hazardous Materials <br />• Chemical containing items that may be discontinued or <br />aesthetically defective or damaged but still in usable condition <br />(i.e., not leaking, pumping activator still intact, etc.). <br />• The usable item can be marked down and sold, used by the <br />store (store use) or donated. <br />Note: Under no circumstances can non usable items be donated <br />e.., leaking containers or aerosol cans). <br />Hazardous Waste <br />Items that are not usable (i.e., not sellable, cannot be donated, <br />expired, cannot be used by the store, etc.). <br />Note: HazWaste materials may not be sent to the CRC. Regardless <br />of the return slip disposition of chemical merchandise, non -sellable <br />HazWaste must be disposed of as HazWaste in the yellow drums at <br />store level. <br />Universal Waste <br />. Hazardous waste that are more common and pose a lower risk <br />to people and the environment than other hazardous waste. <br />• The products that fall into this category that generally affect the <br />stores include: <br />o Waste batteries (Both dry cell and rechargeable) <br />o Fluorescent tubes and other lamps such as sodium vapor. <br />o Non empty aerosol cans <br />o Consumer electronic devices <br />o Items containing mercury (e.g., novelty items containing <br />mercury, lamps with mercury, mercury switches, mercury <br />thermostats, etc. <br />Important: All associates are prohibited from taking waste to local household <br />hazardous waste sites.
