HAZARDOUS MATERIALS LOADER TRAINING
0 •
Basic Safety Guidelines:
• The following guidelines apply for loading and unloading Hazardous
materials:
• Secure packages, including palletized loads against shifting within a vehicle
during Transportation. Securing can be accomplished through tying, blocking
and bracing the load.
• Secure bottles of compressed gases or Propane tanks to prevent damage to their
valves.
• Load packages with orientation marks (up arrows) so the marks remain pointed
up.
• Never stack heavy pallets on top of any light pallets. This may cause the bottom
pallet to be crushed and causing a Hazardous material spill or fire.
• Make certain that the cargo space is suitable for loading. It should be free of nails
and other protruding sharp objects, garbage and debris.
• Do not use any tools which might damage containers or any other packaging
during loading. Don't use hooks.
• If an Associate loads the trailer, the loader is responsible for the proper loading,
• blocking, and bracing of the materials.
• Watch for signs of leaking or damaged containers: LEAKS SPELL TROUBLE!
Do not load leaking or damaged items.
• Do not open leaking or damaged items. Notify your Manager, Supervisor or
department Lead immediately.
• Do not attempt to identify leaking packages/ boxes by smell. Many toxic gases
destroy one's sense of smell. They can injure or cause sickness.
• ORM-D is a marking for mail or shipping in the United States that identifies
"Other Regulated Materials -Domestic". Packages bearing this mark
contain hazardous material in a limited quantity that presents a limited hazard
during transportation, due to its form, quantity, and packaging.
• Be very cautious of any pallets marked "Lancaster, or Lavin's" as this is true
Hazardous materials and should be treated cautiously.
n
LJ
