TO: ALL CALIFORNIA STORE MANAGEMENT TEAMS
FROM:STORE OPERATIONS ADMINISTRATION
RE: Bulletin ENV #1
California "UNIVERSAL WASTE" Handling Rules
Expectation Compliance with environmental rules and regulations is very important to our
company
Policy Points California Law requires any facility that generates waste materials called
"Universal Waste"to manage them in accordance with certain minimum
requirements.
Universal Wastes that require special handling in California include the
following:
• Conventional Battteries(dry cells,alkaline,AA, C, D Cells and the like)
• Rechargeable Batteries(cell phone, cordless tool batteries and the like)
• Small Electronic Devices(cell phones, telephones, radios and the like)
• CRTs and other electronic displays(tube,LCD,plasma TVs and
monitors)
• Fluorescent and other High Intensity Discharge(HID) lamps
• Non-Empty Aerosol Containers
• Mercury Containing Devices(thermostats, thermometers, switches and
the like)
In California these materials cannot be disposed of in the compactor with
the regular trash. California Law requires special handling and recycling of
these wastes.
Handling The table located at the end of this memorandum details the specific handling
requirements for each category of Universal Waste.
Containers Requirements for containers, storage and labeling are as follows:
1) All containers holding these wastes must be labeled"UNIVERSAL
WASTE". Information that must be shown on the label includes:
• Store Number and Name,
• Store full address,
• Store telephone number
• EPA Identification Number
• Waste description(e.g. non-empty aerosol containers),and
• Date that waste is first placed in the container(accumulation start date).
