TO: ALL CALIFORNIA STORE MANAGEMENT TEAMS <br /> FROM:STORE OPERATIONS ADMINISTRATION <br /> RE: Bulletin ENV #1 <br /> California "UNIVERSAL WASTE" Handling Rules <br /> Expectation Compliance with environmental rules and regulations is very important to our <br /> company <br /> Policy Points California Law requires any facility that generates waste materials called <br /> "Universal Waste"to manage them in accordance with certain minimum <br /> requirements. <br /> Universal Wastes that require special handling in California include the <br /> following: <br /> • Conventional Battteries(dry cells,alkaline,AA, C, D Cells and the like) <br /> • Rechargeable Batteries(cell phone, cordless tool batteries and the like) <br /> • Small Electronic Devices(cell phones,telephones,radios and the like) <br /> • CRTs and other electronic displays(tube,LCD,plasma TVs and <br /> monitors) <br /> • Fluorescent and other High Intensity Discharge(HID) lamps <br /> • Non-Empty Aerosol Containers <br /> • Mercury Containing Devices(thermostats,thermometers, switches and <br /> the like) <br /> In California these materials cannot be disposed of in the compactor with <br /> the regular trash. California Law requires special handling and recycling of <br /> these wastes. <br /> Handling The table located at the end of this memorandum details the specific handling <br /> requirements for each category of Universal Waste. <br /> Containers Requirements for containers, storage and labeling are as follows: <br /> 1) All containers holding these wastes must be labeled"UNIVERSAL <br /> WASTE". Information that must be shown on the label includes: <br /> • Store Number and Name, <br /> • Store full address, <br /> • Store telephone number <br /> • EPA Identification Number <br /> • Waste description(e.g. non-empty aerosol containers),and <br /> • Date that waste is first placed in the container(accumulation start date). <br />
