tested in June, 1991, and determinednot to be ignitable
(Attachment C) . L
Dopaco also characterized its press wat.,r waste as corrosive
because of the presence of toluene in a soap called Varn, a
product which has not been used at Dopaco for about a year and a
half. Biodegradable cleaners, Orange Citrus Crazy Clean and TSR
375 and 880, are noncorrosive products currently used at the
facility.
Although U. S . EPA did not observe any RCRA regulated
hazardous waste at the facility, Dopaco provided documentation
indicating that RCRA regulated hazardous waste had been generated
at the facility as recently as 1991. The Material Safety Data
Sheet (MSDS) for the water-based inks (Attachment D) and the
results of the California Waste Extract Test (Attachment E)
indicate that the press water waste generated at the facility is
not a RCRA regulated hazardous waste. However, the results of
analyses performed in June, 1991, indicated the presence of
toluene in the press water waste (Attachment F) . According to
Ken Villani, a varnish containing toluene had been used in a
research and development project at the facility in March, 1991.
Instead of being coated with only polyethylene, the cups in the
project were coated with the varnish and a smaller amount of
polyethylene. According to Villani, the facility decided not to
use the varnish.
The results of the analyses also indicated the presence of
acetone in the press water waste. Villani stated that acetone +
had previously been used in the pre-press area to clean metal
plates but has not been used at the facility since June, 1991.
