Monica
Update stated that on June 2$'h, there was an inspection from Environmental Health
Services Department which kicked off a massive number of training in the facility_
There was an Emergency Response Awareness Training at the facility yesterday,
July 24'". Participants include members from Environmental Services, Pharmacy
and Radiology. Training included waste streams regulations for different
departments. All waste material has to be put in the proper containment and be
disposed the proper way. The instructor gave a lot of information on emergency
response awareness. Several new policies have been created and are being
implemented in all departments.
Monica stated that there was an in-service training today which includes: cleaning
and decontamination of all the barrels, universal waste, biological score testing,
sani-pak training, usage of secondary container, etc. Also, the keys to the storage
bunker have been limited to assigned personnel only.
Monica and Tim continued to share information on universal waste which includes
batteries, waste oil, mercury and florescent tubes. Two of these universal waste
are now handled by the Engineer Department. The disposal of batteries will be
handled by Environmental Services. The department ordered labels for
containers. All batteries should be disposed of in the Battery Disposal Containers.
The containers will be emptied every month or sooner if filled earlier. This is a
mandated policy. Sharon Likely stated that all managers should inform their staff
that it is now a law to dispose of batteries in the proper containers.
Also, in addition, we need to be a mercury-free environment. Sharon stated that
all managers need to check their departments for mercury thermometers and
blood pressure monitors, and if they find them, managers will need to contact EVS
to collect them. Please contact extension 2324 for information. These policies
are also being rolled out in Manteca and Modesto.
Laura Moreno stated that there are other federal laws. One of them is the
Resources Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA). Laura stated that pharmaceutical
waste needs to be disposed in the right way. She mentioned that epinephrine and
nitro need to go into a hazardous waste container and should be stored separately
in a different container in order to manifest offsite. All expired medications should
be given to pharmacy. Sharon stated that there is a great complexity for EUS
regulations. Kristen suggested that Monica should present information on EVS
regulations regularly in Management Team Meeting. Sharon thanked Monica and
Tim for doing a great job.
