"1
l
3.0 SOIL TREATMENT PROGRAM
The soil from the underground storage tanks release area was treated using a thermal soil desorption process.
The thermal soil treatment program consisted of the following technical segments: (1) soil sampling of the
stockpiled soil prior to transportation; (2)transportation of the stockpiled soil to the fixed thermal treatment
plant; (3)thermal soil treatment; (4)confirmation sampling and analysis; and(5)landfilling of the treated
soil. A description of each segment is presented in the following sections.
3.1 SOIL SAMPLING PRIOR TO TRANSPORTATION
On December 18, 1996 during the tank removal program, a representative of Blaes Environmental collected
three soil samples (SP-1, SP-2, and SP-3) to confirm the presence and evaluate the concentration of
petroleum hydrocarbons in the stockpiled soil. The soil samples were transported to Columbia Analytical
Services, Inc, of Canoga Park, California for independent laboratory analysis. The soil samples were
analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) using EPA Method'8015 Modified, for Benzene,
Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Total Xylenes(BTEX)using EPA Methods 5030/8020, for Methyl tert-Butyl
Ether (MTBE) using EPA Methods 5030/8020, and for Total Lead using EPA Methods 3010/6010. The
laboratory report is presented in Appendix A. A summary of the results are presented in Table 2. Soil
sample locations are depicted in Figure 2.
Table 2
Laboratory Results of the Pre-Treatment Soil Sample
Sample TPH Benzene Toluene Ethylbenzene Total Xylenes MTBE Total Lead
I.D.
