4.0 SUMMARY
In February 1997,Amerco Real Estate Company authorized Blaes Environmental and TPS Technologies to
conduct a soil treatment program on stockpiled soil from an underground storage tank release at U-Haul
facility#709-83 located at 450 North Cherokee Lane in Lodi California. The program involved loading and
transporting 75.25 tons of stockpiled soil from the site to TPS Technologies fixed thermal treatment plant
in Richmond,California. The soil was treated using a thermal desorption process. The treated soil was then
sampled to verify that the treatment process was effective in destroying the petroleum hydrocarbon
concentrations in the soil.
The laboratory results of the confirmation soil sample indicated that treated soil did not contain detectable
concentrations of TPH using EPA Method 8015 Modified, BTEX using EPA Methods 5030/8020,or MTBE
using EPA Methods 5030/8020. Based on this data, the soil treatment program was effective in destroying
the previously elevated concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in the soil at the site. The thermally
treated soil was left at TPS Technologies facility to be used as backfill in the West Contra Costa Sanitary
Landfill in Richmond, California.
Based on the laboratory results from this soil thermal treatment program, Amerco/U-Haul requests
confirmation of"no further action required" for this facility.
'' 9
