Those methods not found in
SW 846 are specifically noted below. Refer to the "SWRCB LUFT Field Manual% Appendix D (B), Table 3-5 on page A20
for minimum detection limits for motor vehicle fuel (gasoline and diesel). Refer to 1-2-3 "Regional Board Staff
Recommendations for Initial Evaluation and Investigation of UST's' for the waste and motor oil minimum detection limits.
Detection Limits that remain below the MCL, STLC or Allowable Limit of the contaminant in question will be accepted,
however laboratory shall utilize the most conservative method.
LABORATORY ANALYSES TERMINOLOGY:
TPH-G
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon, Gasoline, GC/FID (5030) 8015 mod or GC/MS 8260
TPH-D
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon, Diesel, GC/FID (3550), 8015 mod or GC/MS 8260
BTX & E
Benzene, Toluene, Xylene & Ethyl Benzene, GC/PID 8020 or GC/MS 8260
CL HC
Chlorinated Hydrocarbon, GC/HSD 8010, GC/MS 8240
TOTAL LEAD
Total lead, AA 7420, AA 7421 or ICP -AES 6010
MTBE
Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether, GC/PID 8020 and confirmed by GC/MS 8260
METALS ICAP or AA
Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry 6010 or Atomic Absorption
Spectrometry 7000. Fused capillary columns are
preferred to packed columns; a packed column may be used as a "first cut' with "dirty" samples or once the hydrocarbons have
been characterized and proper QA/QC is followed.
For drinking water sources, EPA recommends that the 500 series for volatile organic should be used in preference to the 600
series because the detection limits are lower and the QA/QC is better. Samples exhibiting any level of heavy metal
contamination may require further analysis. PHS-EHD recommends holding those samples until disposal is indicated.
EH 23 046 (Revised 10/24/97) Page 8
