r1
U
n
U
HOLDDOWN STRAPS:
Xerxes FRP straps must be used when a tank is to be anchored.
The location of holddown straps for each tank is marked on the
tank by the arrow (>() symbol. Complete data for holddown
straps are given in Table 7-2 and Figure 7-2.
CAUTION: Place the straps only in the locations designated by the
arrow symbol (y<).
To evenly distribute buoyancy loads, tighten all holddown straps
uniformly until they are snug over the ribs but cause no deflection
of the tank. Make an intermediate measurement of the tank diame-
ter AFTER the straps have been installed and tightened.
HARDWARE AND ANCHORING POINTS:
Anchoring hardware and anchor points must be sized according to
Table 7-3 and manufactured to industry standards and dimensions.
The installing contractor is responsible for providing hardware and
anchor points of sufficient strength. The particular configuration
of hardware will be determined by the owner or the owner's
representative. Locate the anchor points as shown in Table 7-2
and Figure 7-2. Refer to dimension "E". Align all anchor points with
the marked ()() location on the tanks, within a tolerance of ± 1 ".
For specific information on hardware and its use, consult the
hardware manufacturer.
CAUTION: Use only appropriate sized hardware with the strap
eye. Oversized hardware may damage the strap eye and result
in personal injury or property damage. See Figure 7-4 for strap
eye dimensions.
TABLE 7-3
TANK
DIAMETER
MINIMUM TURNBUCKLE DIAMETER
(BY TYPE)
MINIMUM
WIRE ROPE
DIAMETER
HOOK
JAW
EYE
4'
314"
1/2"
1/2"
318"
6'
314"
112"
1/2"
3/8"
8'
11/4"
314"
314"
1/2"
10'
11/4"
314"
3/4"
1/2"
12'
1114"
3/4"
3/4"
1/2"
FIGURE 7-4
NOTE: Drop -forged type turnbuckle may be used in place of all or a portion o4
•wire rope.
NOTE: All exposed metal on the holddown straps, turnbuckles and/or threaded rod
must be coated or galvanized to prevent corrosion (Figure 7-4A).
NOTE: when fastening wire rope, use a minimum of three clamps on each joint.
Use shackle -type or chair -type clamps as appropriate (Figure 7-4A).
:7
TURNBUCKLE
WIRE WIRE
ROPE POPE
CLAMPS /
FIGURE 74A
WARNING: Do not use air pressure to test tanks that contain
flammable or combustible liquids or vapors, and do not perform
any post installation pressure test. The fuel/air mixture may
explode and cause death, severe personal injury or property
damage. Tanks that will be ballasted with a flammable product
should be air tested before ballasting.
WARNING: If product is used as ballast, exercise special care in
handling. Safeguard against sparks, fire or product spills. Improper
handling of product can cause a fire or explosion, and may result
in death, severe personal injury or property damage.
INTERMEDIATE DEFLECTION MEASUREMENT
After backfill is brought to the top of the tank, make an intermediate
measurement of vertical deflection according to the instructions
in Section 13.
TEST
After the tank has been measured and vertical deflection is deter-
mined to be within the limits specified by Xerxes, the tank must be
pressure tested to ensure that no damage occurred during installa-
tion. The procedure in Section 2 Pre -installation Testing should be
followed, soaping all exposed areas of the tank and all fittings.
Because most of the tank exterior is no longer visible, the tank
must be tested by checking the gauge for one hour at the test
manifold for any drop in pressure. Carefully relieve the pressure in
the tank and if applicable remove the hose/valve assembly or quick
disconnect assembly from dry Double Wall tanks.
WARNING: Do not use air pressure to test tanks that contain
flammable or combustible liquids or vapors and do not perform
any post installation pressure test. The fuel/air mixture may
explode and cause death, severe personal injury, or property
damage. Tanks that will be ballasted with a flammable product
should be air tested before ballasting.
WARNING: If product is used as ballast, exercise special care in
handling. Safeguard against sparks, fire or product spills,' Improper
handling of product can cause a fire or explosion, and may result
in death, severe personal injury or property damage.
The tank may be ballasted after the backfill is even with the top
of the tank and post -installation testing, if applicable, has been
successfully completed. Only under wet -hole conditions as
described in Section 6, should ballast be added before the backfill
is even with the top of the tank. When filling the tank, make sure
the tank is properly vented. The vent must be large enough to
allow the displaced air to escape.
