D. USE SLOTTED PIPE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE WELL HOLE TO APPROXIMATELY 3 <br /> FEET ABOVE THE MAXIMUM GROUNDWATER TABLE, CONSIDERING WATER TABLE <br /> FLUCTUATION. THE SLOTTED PIPE SHALL BE CAPPED AT THE BOTTOM. <br /> E. THE BLANK PIPE SECTION ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF THE SLOTTED PIPE AND <br /> EXTENDS UPWARD TO JUST BELOW GRADE ELEVATION. AVOID USING GLUE TO <br /> COUPLE THE PIPE SECTIONS; RATHER, USE THREADED PVC PIPE OR OTHER <br /> COUPLING METHODS WHENEVER POSSIBLE. A LOCKABLE CAP SHALL BE INSTALLED <br /> ON TOP OF THE BLANK PIPE. <br /> F. ONCE THE SLOTTED AND BLANK PIPE HAS BEEN SET IN THE HOLE, BACKFILL WITH <br /> A FILTER PACK OF POROUS MATERIAL SUCH AS PEA GRAVEL. THE FILTER PACK <br /> SHOULD BE FILLED AROUND THE PIPE TO AT LEAST 2 FEET ABOVE THE TOP OF <br /> THE SLOTTED SECTION. DO NOT BACKFILL AROUND THE SLOTTED PIPE WITH CLAY <br /> OR OTHER MATERIAL WHICH WOULD IMPEDE GROUNDWATER FLOW INTO THE <br /> OBSERVATION WELL. <br /> G. ABOVE THE FILTER PACK, BACKFILL WITH CLEAN, DRILLED SOIL MATERIAL TO <br /> APPROXIMATELY 2 TO 3 FEET BELOW GRADE, AND TOP THE BACKFILL WITH A <br /> SURFACE SEAL OF CEMENT GROUT OR PACKED CLAY TO PREVENT SURFACE <br /> CONTAMINATION FROM INFILTRATING THE FILTER PACK AND ENTERING THE WELL. <br /> H. "DEVELOP" THE OBSERVATION WELL BY FLOODING IT WITH WATER AND THEN PUMP <br /> IT OUT. THIS ACTION WILL DRAW DRILLING MUD AND FINE PARTICLES OUT OF <br /> THE FILTER PACK, IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF THE WELL. <br /> I. AUGURED HOLE SOIL CHARACTERISTICS WILL BE RECORDED. <br /> J. OBSERVATION WELLS SHALL BE PROTECTED FROM DAMAGE DUE TO TRAFFIC OR <br /> OTHER HAZARDS AND REMAIN ACCESSIBLE FOR FUTURE USE AND OBSERVATION. <br /> WHERE LOCATED IN TRAFFIC AREAS, DRIVEWAY MANHOLES AND COVERS SHALL BE <br /> INSTALLED. <br /> 5. OBSERVATION WELL MONITORING AND DATA <br /> A. ESTABLISH A BENCHMARK AND DETERMINE THE RELATIVE ELEVATIONS AT THE TOP <br /> OF EACH TEST WELL PIPE. <br /> B. MONITOR THE WATER AND DEPTHS IN EACH PIPE. <br /> NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALL MEASUREMENTS BE FROM THE TOP OF EACH PIPE TO <br /> THE WATER AND/OR PRODUCT LEVELS IN EACH PIPE. RECORD MEASUREMENTS TO <br /> THE NEAREST EIGHTH INCH. <br /> C. PRODUCT SHOULD BE PUMPED OUT OF THE OBSERVATION WELLS ONLY WHEN <br /> DIRECTED BY HEAD OFFICE.
