Page 2 January 12, 1987 <br /> Mr. Robert Hall <br /> Environmental Protection Agency <br /> Alternative Water Disposal Technology <br /> water producing oil and gas wells in California. The end result of the cost <br /> advantages of this system is that by lowering water disposal costs, a given <br /> gas well can ,be operated longer when using this technology than it could be <br /> operated utilizing remote injecticnlwells. <br /> ASI's concept is to use thermal energy to evaporate the produced water. The <br /> evaporated, pure water is released to the atmosphere in vapor form or <br /> recovered if there is sufficient economic value to the water. The <br /> concentrated, residual brine is handled in one of the following manners: <br /> A. Further processing to yield salt. <br /> B. Used as a "kill" fluid in reworking an existing well. <br /> C. Disposed of in an approved disposal facility. <br /> The unit is sized such that it is located at the gas or oil well site, hence <br /> eliminating the majority of the off-site trucking charges associated with <br /> off-site injection well disposal. <br /> The thermal energy required for evaporation is generated via either the <br /> direct combustion of natural gas or recovery from the waste heat of a prime <br /> mover. In the case of the waste heat unit, the mechanical rotating energy <br /> from the prime mover is used to either drive a gas compressor or generate <br /> electricity. The electricity is sold to the local utility and/or consumed <br /> on site by the oil or gas producer. <br /> Economics are extremely site specific. Among the pertinent variables are: <br /> A. Produced brine salinity <br /> B. Value of natural gas <br /> C. Water production rate <br /> D. Value of mechanical energy generated, waste heat unit <br /> E. Injection well disposal cost <br /> F. Hauling charges <br /> The "bottom line" is, "Can the unit compete in a free marketplace?" In <br /> California, the answer in an unequivocal "YES". <br /> We are confident that ASI technology will: <br /> A. Perform reliably in a cost effective manner. <br /> B. Provide realistic options to existing disposal practice. <br /> C.
