03 November 2003
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1055
Page 4of6
(OVM). Excavated soil that appears visibly stained or has a petroleum hydrocarbon odor will be
considered impacted.
Due to the presence of ground water in the current excavation, site preparations will include
submersible pumps,a generator, and appropriate holding tanks.Removed ground water will be held
on site in a temporary holding tank until transferred to an appropriate waste disposal facility.
The proposed scope of work includes the removal of petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soil and
ground water from the former UST location. The proposed soil removal and sampling will include
the following tasks:
• Soil excavation;
• Soil sample collection and analysis;
• De-watering of excavation;
• Soil disposal; and
• Report preparation.
3.1. SOIL SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS
Soil samples will be collected from the excavation and submitted for laboratory analysis.Following
State of California Regional Water Quality Board, Tri-Regional Board recommendations, soil
samples will be collected from each side-wall of the excavation at a minimum interval of every 20
linear feet, and from the base of the excavation at a minimum of one sample for every 400 square
feet of excavation area.In addition,soil samples will also be collected from the stockpiled soil from
the excavation.For soil disposal characterization,a 4:1 composite soil sample will be collected from
every 100 yards of soil excavated. Field procedures for collection of soil samples are presented in
Section 4.2.
Each soil sample will be analyzed by a State of California Department of Health Services (DHS)-
certified laboratory for the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015 Modified;
• Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylene (BTEX) and methyl tert-butyl ether
(MTBE) in accordance with EPA methods 8260M and
• Volatile organic compounds (VOC)with EPA methods 8260M
Advanced GeoEnvironmentm,Inc.
