2.2 Sampling Activities
' On April 29, 2002, IT collected soil samples from the tank excavation, former product pipeline
trench and soil stockpile, under the direction and supervision of Mr. Dennis Catanyag of the
SJCEHD. Soil samples PB-TP-1-(13) and PB-TP-2-(13) were collected from each end of the
' tank excavation, at a depth of 13 feet below surface grade (2 feet below the base of the former
tank). The soil samples were collected by pushing sample tubes into the soil collected using the
bucket of the backhoe, until full.
' One soil sample, labeled PB-TP-3-(3.5)was collected from the former product pipeline trench at
a depth of 3.5 feet bsg, approximately 2 feet below the base of the former product pipeline. The
soil sample was collected by using a hand auger to obtain the desired sample depth, and then
using a slide hammer equipped with a core barrel sampler lined with a brass tube.
' In order to evaluate soil re-use or disposal options, a four-composite soil sample, labeled
PB-SP-I(A-D), was collected from the soil stockpile. The soil samples were collected by pushing
a sample tube into the stockpile until full.
' After each soil sample was collected, the ends of the sample tube were covered with teflon tape
and capped. The soil samples were then appropriately labeled, placed in a cooler with ice, and
' transported under chain-of-custody protocol to the analytical laboratory. Copies of the chain of
custody forms are included in Appendix E.
' 2.3 Sample Analyses
' The soil samples were transported and submitted to McCampbell Analytical Labs, Inc., an ELAP-
certified laboratory in Pacheco, California. The soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum
hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-D) under EPA method 8015 (modified) and for benzene, toluene,
' ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) constituents under EPA method 8020. Copies of the chain of
custody documents are included in Appendix E.
2.4 Sample Analytical Results
Results of the laboratory analysis encountered TPH-D in the composite stockpile sample, at a
concentration of 4.4 parts per million (ppm). TPH-D was not encountered in the soil samples
collected from the tank excavation or pipeline trench. BTEX constituents were not encountered
' CNCD\06-25-02VSHARE\US7102-0057.dm
3
