Harding Lawson Associates
September 26, 1988
17060, 008 . 03
The Southland Corporation
5820 Stoneridge Mall Road
Pleasanton, California 94556 RF C
Attention: Mr. Hal Miller F/
Gentlemen:
Results of Vapor Survey and
Additional Ground-Water Monitoring
455 West Grantline Road
Tracy, California
This letter presents the response of Harding Lawson Associ-
ates (HLA) to the draft communication of Mr. Gordon Boggs of
the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board
(CVRWQCB) dated August 29 , 1988 , and addressed to Ms. Laurie
Cotulla of the San Joaquin Local Health District. Mr.
Boggs' communication was in response to HLA's Interim
Report, Phase IV Investigation, Tasks 3 and 4 , dated August
25, 1988 . That document contained a proposal to install a
deep well , along with a description of the installation of
shallow borings and monitoring wells, and the results of
chemical tests on soil and ground-water samples.
In his letter, Mr. Boggs indicated that the proposed 60-
foot-depth of the deep well was excessive. He indicated
that the well should extend into, but not through, the con-
fining layer that separates the first and second aquifers.
We agree that a shallower well is more desirable; we there-
fore wish to revise the projected total depth of the well to
between 30 and 40 feet. We believe that on-site conditions
may dictate the need to go beyond 40 feet and that the ulti-
mate well depth is best determined in the field by our geol-
ogist. Recommended procedures for installing, developing,
and sampling this well are the same as those presented in
our Interim Report of August 25, 1988. The location of the
deep well is shown on the attached Plate 1.
Mr Boggs' letter also requested a vapor study inside the
convenience building, reasoning that the subsurface fill
Engineers 1355 Willow Way Teleonone Arizona Colorado Texas
and Suite 109 415/687-9660 Alaska Hawaii Telecody
Geoscienusts Concord.CA 94520 California Nevada 415/687-9673.
