*40
Ms. Lori Duncan
August 25, 2008
advanced by Soilprobe Inc. (C57-727748) using a direct -push drilling rig equipped with 1% -inch
and/or 2'/< -inch diameter drilling rods. Access to the former USTs is impaired by overhead and
underground utilities making it problematic to use a larger hollow stem auger -type drill rig
Two borings will be vertically and three borings will be advanced at angles of up to 30° from
vertical. The angle borings will be advanced beneath the USTs that border First Street. This will
allow the collection of soil samples beneath the tank pits without going through backfill material
and also provide a safe zone to work around underground utilities. The borings near Kleinfelder's
B-24 location and the waste oil tank will be advanced vertically.
I
Soil samples will be collected continuously for the purpose of soil -type identification, subjective
evaluation of hydrocarbon contamination using visual/olfactory methods and a photo ionization
detector (PID), and for possible laboratory analysis. Soils will be classified in accordance with both
the North American Commission on Stratigraphic Nomenclature, and ASTM Designation D2488-
90, which is equivalent to the Unified Soil Classification System.
Up to two soil samples per boring will be submitted for laboratory analysis. Soil samples will be
uniquely labeled, temporarily stored in an ice chest refrigerated to a temperature of
approximately 4°C and delivered under chain of custody protocol to Argon Laboratories (ELAP
#2359) for analysis. Soil samples will be analyzed for the following constituents:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg) using EPA Method 8015M
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd) using EPA Method 8015M
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX) using EPA 8021B
• Methyl tert-butyl ether (MtBE) by EPA method 8260B
Reporting
Following the receipt of analytical results, a technical report describing the methods and results of
this investigation will be submitted to San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department. The
report will describe to the degree possible the nature and extent of soil contamination beneath the
former USTs and dispenser island. The report will be reviewed and signed by a California
Registered Geologist.
Protocols and Safety
All field and laboratory activities will be conducted in accordance with Ground Zero's Quality
Assurance/Quality Control Plan and Site Safety Plan on file with the EHD under the supervision of
a California Registered Geologist.
G:\GROUNDZE\MATr%RepoM\Work Plans\Initial Site Investigation.doc
