has bben documented as receiving eposures over
published permissible exposure levels.
If an employee develops a lost-time illness or injury during this
project, the Project Superintendent must be provided with a physician's
statement authorizing the employee to return to work.
Medical Records: Documentation of medical exams shall be provided as
part of the Certificate of Worker or Visitor Acknowledgment.
Medical records shall be maintained in accordance with CFR 29 Part 1910
Section . 120, and CFR 29 Part 1926 Section . 65.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
GENERAL: General description and discussion of the levels of
protection and protective gear.
The two basic objectives of any PPE program should be to protect the
worker from safety and health hazards, and to prevent injury to the
worker from incorrect use and/or malfunction of the PPE. No single
combination of protective equipment and clothing is capable of
protecting against all hazards. Thus PPE shall be used in conjunction
with other protective methods such as engineering controls and proper
work practices to minimize exposure potential and/or injury to the
employee. The use of PPE can itself cause worker hazards due to
physical and/or psychological stress as well as improper or negligent
use. The proper PPE must be selected which controls exposure to the
worker while allowing the worker to complete his/her tasks in a safe
manner.
The contractor shall maintain a comprehensive personal protective
equipment program which includes hazard identification, medical
monitoring, environmental surveillance; selection, use, maintenance and
decontamination of PPE; and adequate training for all personnel.
As required by the standard, PPE must be selected which will protect
employees from the specific hazards which they are likely to encounter
during their work on-site.
Selection of the appropriate PPE is a complex process which shall take
into consideration a variety of factors. Key factors involved in this
process are identification of the hazards, or suspected hazards; their
routes of potential hazard to employees (inhalation, skin absorption,
ingestion, and eye or skin contact) ; and the performance of the PPE
materials (and seams) in providing a barrier to these hazards. The
amount of protection provided by PPE is material-hazard specific. That
is, protective equipment materials will protect well against some
hazardous substances and poorly, or not at all, against others. In many
instances, protective equipment materials cannot be found which will
provide continuous protection from the particular hazardous substance.
In these cases the breakthrough time of the protective material shall
exceed the work durations.
91
Site Safety 6 Health Plan Rev./1.0
October 20, 1997
