ILACRIONN6I/INC. SACRAMENTO
' standard diesel-fuel analysis performed by an analytical
laboratory (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Diesel) will not
detect the more volatile fractions which will be associated with
soil vapor. Versar therefore utilized the analytical methodology
for TPH--G to ensure detection of the volatile compounds which may
be removed by the SVE.
A total of 14 soil-vapor samples collected during the pilot
study were sent to Trace for analysis. Ten of the samples were
collected with EW6 connected to the SVE and with EW7 and EW8 left
' open to the atmosphere. The samples were collected upon restart
of the SVE system to quantify the maximum concentrations of
' petroleum hydrocarbons being removed. The sample collected at
the end of the pilot study was collected after an operational
' period of 11 days.
4 . 6 Analytical Laboratory Results
All samples submitted for analysis contained detectable
concentrations of TPH-G, except for the sample submitted on June
17 , 1991. The June 17 sample did not contain any soil-vapor due
to collection equipment malfunction. The TPH--G concentrations
ranged from 5. 2 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) in the sample
' collected at the end of the pilot study to 29 mg/m3 collected on
June 11, 1991. The second highest concentration detected (26
1 mg/m3) was recorded on May 29, 1991 at the start of the pilot
study.
' All of the samples analyzed contained some of the BTEX
compounds in various concentrations. Benzene was detected in all
' samples except the sample collected on July 3 , 1991. The
detected benzene concentrations ranged from 0. 25 mg/m3 to 1. 1
' mg/m3. Toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were detected in all
samples analyzed except the August 12 and August 26, 1991
samples. The detected toluene concentrations ranged from 0. 035
13
