77*
3 PIM MEMEM -
rJ
Organic vapor monitoring is based upon the measurement of volatile organic3."
compounds (VOC°e) in the soil pore apace an they vaporize into the soil - •'=
atmosphere from a source. The source of the V0C's may be in soil or
N ground water. Higher concentration of voc's at a particular subsurface
location will tend to result in higher VOC concentration in the Boil—gas
p above that location. Since VOC's are the major components of most (
hydrocarbons and solvents, this technology can be utilized to assess the
l presence and lateral extent of subsurface hydroccrbon and solvent
e) contamination. '` +`
;?e Reconnaissance organic vapor nonitaring was conducted at the Shell statim
using. OVM's. The OVM's are adsorbent carbon sr:mslers which may be buried
in the ground to assess the presence of organic vapors. Each OVM is
sheltered in a tin manifold which has been steam cleaned to remove any
volatile compounds, The OVM and manifold are placed in a shallow hole and
covered with clean sand. The remaining hole is backfilled with soil
cuttings and is covered with a plastic can anal a bentonite plaster to r¢
protect the OVM from surface infiltration,
P
Twenty OVM's were installed at the Snell station on 2S September :987.
a
The locations of the OVM'a are sham on ?late 2. Of the 20 OV—Is, 18 were .114 ri
installed one and one—half feet below the ground surface and 2 others were
installed three feet below the ground Surface. The OVM's buried three * ; 1.
2*k feet below the arrface were installed to assess.*, whether organic vapors, if '`W
A detected, were Migratingw
vertically .from a deeper source or laterally
under the impermeable a4phalt or concrete. They were each installed three
feet from a shallow (1.5 feet deep) OVM to provide gradient information.
The 2 pairs Of shallow plus deep OVM's are called "depth profiles" and are
shown on Plate 2.
