kJESTIC TECHNOLOGIES, INC.
With the exception of Trichloroethane, the identified
hydrocarbon constituents do not have significantly high
vapor Pressure.
Most work operations are to be performed after any
remaining tank contents have been removed.
The two phases of work where occupational exposures to
chemical hazards are likely to be most significant are the
initaial tank pumping (if required based on existence of
residule contents) and the excavation of any contaminated
soils. Because no Previous site data is available which
allows for further characterization of these hazards Prior
to commencement of work, the SHP requires that periodic air
monitoring be conducted during operations to evaluate
current conditions and the need for use of personal
protective equipment, including respirators.
8. 2. 2 FLAMMABLE/EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERES:
Because many of the constituents identified in this project
are flammable, tanks and pipelines top be removed or closed
in place (specific pipelines only) . may contain, or generate
upon handling. flammable/explosive atmospheres. For this
project. any atmosphere containing ten percent or greater of
the lower flammable limit relative the calibration gas of
the air monitoring instrument used to sample such
atmospheres ( 10% LEL) shall be considered a flammable and
explosive atmosphere. In the event a flammable/explosive
atmosphere is identified. all sources shall be eliminated,
all employees removed from the work area, and the locatien
ventilated , in the case of tanks, the interior shall be
inerted with carbon dioxide (i. e. . dry ice) prior to any
additional handling. Care shall be taken to keep all field
personnel upwind during all tank inerting operations .
WAP.NING-LEL measurements below 1099 indicate the following:
The atmsophere is not considered framable/explosive.
The atmosphere concentration may change ( i. e. , get
better, get worse) .
Tne atmosphere still contains high concentrations of
measureable hydrearbons with may likely be toxic (or
even fatal) if personnel exposure is not controlled.
