k" KLEINEELDER
3 FIELD ACTIVITIES
3.1 DRILLING AND SOIL SAMPLING
On November 6, 1992, one angle boring (B-1) and four vertical soil borings (B-2 through B-5)
— were drilled adjacent to the tank. Soil boring B-1 was drilled at a 45 degree angle from
vertical, and soil samples were collected (or attempted) every 5 feet to a termination depth of
27 auger feet (19 vertical feet). Soil samples were collected every 5 feet (starting at 10 feet) to
a termination depth of 25 feet in vertical borings B-2 through B-5. Table 1 summarizes the
sample locations and depths.
The borings were advanced with a truck-mounted drill rig equipped with 8-inch hollow stem
augers. While drilling, an experienced environmental geologist logged the boreholes,
classified the soil, and collected soil samples for field screening and chemical analysis. In
general, the soil consisted of backfill pea gravel to a depth of 13 feet. Interbedded sand, silty
sand, and silt were encountered between 13 and 25 feet. No free ground water was
encountered in the borings. A copy of the Unified Soil Classification System (used to identify
the soil), a boring log legend and logs for each boring are included in Appendix A. Detailed
procedures concerning the soil borings and sampling methodology are presented in
Appendix B, Kleinfelder Field Activities Protocol.
The locations of the tank and soil borings are shown on Plate 2, Boring Location Map. A
copy of the approved boring permit is included in Appendix C.
3.2 QUALITATIVE FIELD SCREENING
To provide a qualitative indication of volatile organic compounds, an organic vapor detector
utilizing a flame-ionization detector (FID) was used to field screen the samples collected from
— each boring. The FID measures total ionizable organic compounds in the air in parts per
million by volume (ppmv).
Each sample was screened in the field, and the FID readings were recorded on the boring logs.
Table 1 summarizes the FID measurements for each sample. The samples collected from B-1
through B-4 had FID readings of 0 ppmv. FID readings of 2, 20 and 15 ppmv were recorded
for the three soil samples collected from B-5 at 15, 20 and 25 feet beneath the ground surface.
FR8-92-211 Page 4 of 8 24-220191-A00
Copyright 1992 Kleinfelder, Inc.
